2013 DB coaching, incompetant? Wednesday, March 19, 2014 5:46 PM (permalink)

"It's been much better as compared to the last few years because we actually get a lot more attention and as far as last year, we didn't," junior safety Jarrod Wilson said. "Coach Mallory had the corners and safeties, and for the most part, the safeties kind of got put to the back, to the side I believe. So it helps.

"Just our technique and fundamentals are a lot better. We hone in on them and we actually get the time to go in and watch the film and watch our mistakes to learn and get better."

Especially with so many young players seeing the field at cornerback in 2013 - true freshmen Jourdan Lewis and Channing Stribling consistently played - Mallory spent considerable time and effort with that group, the players said. And it was easy to do so considering he had a fifth-year senior, Thomas Gordon, anchoring the safeties.

With Mallory locked in on the safeties this year, those competitors feel their making dramatic strides.

"It's a big difference," sophomore Dymonte Thomas said. "When you made a mistake on the field, he was looking at the corners and the safeties and he could be talking to a corner and a safety messed up. I have a question on a play and he didn't see it, and the whole practice would go on and I'm making the same mistake.

Soooo......the safeties didn't get proper coaching, and didn't watch film? Nice sighhhhh

My question is how many college football programs have TWO secondary coaches & do those that don't have those same issues?

I do like the players' comments but, like the saying goes..."action talks, bull**** walks"...let's see how it works out, come the fall!

Wilson needs to keep his trap shut and keep that sh*t in the locker room.

This begs the question, "where is the senior leadership on this team for a player who wants to flap his gums, specifically about a coach who's currently on the staff?"

Just shut up!

Go Blue!!

Ohio St.'s actions are not unlike their lower intestine: stinky and loaded with danger.

Yeah, I agree Scotts, there were multiple reasons for me to post this.........just through coaching staff under the bus, can't be a good thing.

Well it's not like Jarrod is saying anything we didn't already know. I don't think he intended to take a shot. He was probably asked what the difference has been between this year and last and he spoke his mind.

I remain suspect when it comes to the secondary.

Well this is the first year we will have two so it remains to be seen if we will have those issues or not.

Honestly 4life, I didn't know our safeties didn't get the attention they needed. Sounds like even watching film was an issue for them, that should never be an issue IMO.

Hope we see a dramatic improvement in dback field this season.

How important are the position coaches anyway? If something goes wrong, typically its the coordinators that get the axe. Rarely do position coaches get fired.  My vision of a position coach is a guy that runs drills with his area.   If the O line coaching was the real problem, do you Borgess would be the only one fired?  i mean, we had a stout defense 2011 and had the same coaching staff. Don't you guys think that GMATT has his hands in every aspect?

Wow, some pretty revealing statements in this and it's disturbing.  Didn't get the time to watch film, kept making the same mistakes in practice, etc etc.  This entire staff is pathetic.

I read it exactly as you did JSJ.  And then I went deaf from the alarm bells going off so I clicked off.

Coordinators get the axe usually because they are judged to be ultimately responsible for the play of the their unit as a whole. Most aren't specialized in every area though, not to the point of being able to fix issues at the individual level. Al Borges isn't an O-line expert, he had little ability to fix guys fundamentals (which is why he and Funk should have been sharing a UHAUL).

The position coaches are VERY important, they are on the grown level doing most of the dirty work. Coordinators for most part focus on scheme, game planning, and play calling.

p.s Our secondary was just as poorly coached in 2011 and is what last year. It has been a consistent thing. The stats don't begin to tell the full story.
