Post Signing Day/Pre-Spring Practice Depth Chart - Friday, February 05, 2010 2:31 PM ( #1 )
Now that Signing Day is over, I decided to put together my own depth chart of what I think we'll see heading into the spring.  The only freshmen listed are the ones that enrolled early.  Let me know what you think?  What am I missing?

Offense:

QB - Forcier, D. Robinson, Gardner, Sheridan
TB - Shaw, Smith, Touissant, Hopkins, White
FB - Moundros, Cox
SLOT - Odoms, Roundtree, Gallon, Grady, T. Robinson, D. Robinson
X - Stonum, Stokes, Jackson
Y - Hemingway, Gordon, Miller
TE - Koger, Moore, Webb
LT - Dorenstein, Lewan
LG - Schilling, Barnum, Mealer
C - Molk, Khoury, Pace
RG - Ferrera, Washington
RT - Huyege, Omameh, Lewan, Schofield

Notes:  The OL is a complete guess to me.  Not sure if they will move Schilling around again or Ferrera back to D.  How much progress has been made by Lewan, Schofield, Washington.  I think the OL is WIDE open.  Only Molk is set at center.

Defense (3 DL + HYBRID):

DE - VanBergen, Patterson
DT - Martin, Campbell, Sagesse
DT - Banks, Lolota
HYBRID/SPINNER - Roh, Herron, Watson
MIKE - Ezeh, Fitzgerald, Leach
SAM - M. Jones, Simmons
WILL - Mouton, Demons, Herron
LCB - Turner, T. Jones
RCB - Woolfork, Rogers
FS - Williams, T. Gordon
SS - Kovas, Emilien

Notes:  Could be lots of change on D.  Would Koger move to DE?  What about Ferrera?  Will Ezeh be moved to DE?  Could C. Gordon or Cox be moved to D?  Who's going to take the place of Graham?  Remember this is pre-fall, so guys like Dorsey, Christian, Avery, Robinson will get a look in the defensive backfield too in the fall.

Specialists:

P - Hagerup (he's not enrolled, but he's the only punter)
PR - Odoms, T. RobinsonKO - Gibbon
KR - Stonum

The division between the Rich Rod supporters and the Rich Rod bashers/Carr supporters is amazing and has turned this place upside down.

He's a redshirt junior, so he probably won't have a scholly.

I think Roundtree earned the starter role ahead of Odoms.

Glad to see Molk is back.  For some reason I thought he was a senior.  The O Line was definitely better when he was in the game.

Technically I would say they both start. Odoms lines up on the outside a lot, or I thought he did. I like the chemistry Forcier and Roundtree had at the end of the year.

I agree with most of this. It will be interesting to see who will get the bulk of the carries between Shaw and Smith. I would assume Shaw, but Smith showed some promise and saw more PT towards the end of the year.

I'm going to guess tha Schilling and Molk are set on the Oline. The oline is a toss up outside of them two. We need strong Oline play this season.

On defense, I would say the only set starters are Mike Martin, Ryan Van Bergen (don't know if he'll stay at the same position though), Craig Roh, and Jonas Mouton.

I think Mouton remains a starter because of his performance in the OSU game. Ezeh needs to step it up though or Fitzgerald will wind up starting.

I expect Turner to start at CB as well, but you forgot to list JT Floyd at the other corner. He's either going to start alongside him (moving Woolfork to safety), or he will play the nickel.

Kovacs played good this past season, but it is going to be hard for him to keep his starting spot. Not sure about Mike Williams either.

Is there anyway they would move Kovacs to LB?  I know he's not the biggest guy, but he tackles well and he coverage is not his forte.
Hail to the Victors!

It's my guess that Shaw and Touissant get the bulk of the carries until Smith is fully recovered from ACL surgery.

I'm wondering if the coaches are thinking about moving Schilling again.  I thought he did a good job at guard.  I've heard they might try him at LT, but I don't know if that's a good move.

The defense is a crap shoot.  I'm just going off of last year and who's returning.  There could be LOTS of change b/c Rich Rod and the coaches will be experimenting with players.  Plus, some of the frosh coming in will get a chance, especially in the backfield.

I don't see how Kovacs keeps his starting job this fall.  He will going into spring, but if he starts game 1 against UConn, I don't think that is good news.  Safety play is a BIG issue.

Re:Post Signing Day/Pre-Spring Practice Depth Chart - Friday, February 05, 2010 5:57 PM ( #12 )
In truth we could have a completely different threat just on the defense.

The D-line is still a question at this point, we`ll know a lot more after spring. We know all the names just not where they`ll fit, Roh could end up at DE or stay at Quick, Big Will could end up at NT, Martin could end up at DT, etc.

The spinner position is wide open at this point, could be Mike Jones, could be Hawthorne, could be Furman, could be MRob.

I am hoping and praying that Fitz or Demens will develop to the point of taking Ezeh and Mouton's jobs, or at the very least push the seniors to the point of playing better to stay on the field.

The secondary is a bigger question mark than the D-line, I have some idea how things could go with the line, no clue with the secondary. Its a pretty good bet the JT and Woolfolk will start just not where. If Cullen can lock down the other CB spot it will allow Woolfolk to move back to safety. The wildcard is Dorsey, RR said he would start out at CB and could move back to safety. I don't see any way Dorsey stays off the field, we don't have another player with his skillset on the roster. Vlad Emilien is still in the mix at FS, he should be completely over his knee injury be spring and it would shock me to see him push for the FS spot. Mike Williams is still around, maybe a new safety coach will turn him around I`m not sure, he's got terrible instincts as a safety so there's just no way to tell.

Can't wait until spring practice so all this stuff can be sorted out.

If I was a betting man I would guess that the O-line will end up looking like

LT-Lewan/Dorenstein, Huyge
LG-Schilling
C-Molk
RG-Barnum
RL-Omameh

LT is the biggest offensive question mark going into next year.

Yep, I didn't know what to put down for starters.  Guys could be moved all over the place.  I think the only secure spots are C (Molk) and LG (Schilling).  Everything else is up for grabs.  I would like to see Lewan win a spot b/c I have heard nothing but great things about him.

Re:Post Signing Day/Pre-Spring Practice Depth Chart - Saturday, February 06, 2010 3:53 AM ( #15 )
Finally some speed and depth:

Qb: 4 guy's who can play but only 2 will

RB: I like this group tons of speed. Need to find a short yardage guy I'm a firm believer in that.

OL: better group but they must improve over last season

WR: someone needs to step up and become THE go to guy. Not impressed by many last season

DL: better need more pressure on the qb

LB: a very solid group always can get better.

CB/S: Ok, it looks like they have playmakers in the secondary for a change. But, their going to be young.

ST: Another unit that needs to play better period.

So just that I am correct on terminology, Roh's position last year was the "quick" and Stevie Brown was considered a "spinner?" I think that's the right terminology but correct me if I am wrong.

Don't you guy's think Michigan would be better if they used the FB during short yards and down around the goal line? Not just as a blocker but a carrier.
