Michigan - Northwestern - Tuesday, February 02, 2010 8:52 PM ( #1 )
So we gave Beilein a contract extension based on what ??  This was an absolutely disgraceful performance from a team which brought nearly everyone back from an NCAA berth and a big 1st round win.  In the biggest game of the season thus far, they are getting blown out by a Northwestern team that is 3-6 in the Big 10 and their leaders, Sims and Harris, are a combined 6-23 with 15 points.  I had high hopes for the basketball program after last year's performance but it looks like we are right back to the Brian Ellerbe / Tommy Amaker days of .500 basketball, losing regularly to MSU and sometimes making the NIT.  Can anyone justify the contract extension other than Bill Martin locking up a deal for his guy before he leaves.

My rant is on the my dog can shoot 3 better...I think contract extension is justified I also think we need a point guard and some inside presence, and Harris and sims to give a chit.

Ding. You nailed it. Go away Martin.

Didn't Beilein have two more years on his current contract? I mean I'm not saying don't give him an extension ever, but can you really look at 2 and 1/2 years and say, "Yup, lock him up!" It is too small a sample size-look at Notre Dame and Charlie, same thing. Obviously not nearly as much $$, but they took that one year as a thing to come and locked him up.

Why not wait till the end of year 4 to start talking about an extension? When you have 4 seasons to look at and see how things have gone. Nah, we had one ok year and Martin wet himself wanting to lock his guy up and protect his legacy. Got news for you Bill, while you have done great things for UM in getting us out of the red and updating our entire athletic campus you are going to be looked back as a failure because you couldn't hire a coach to save your life. Fairly or unfairly as that is.

The contract extention should have at least waited until after this season. I am just as upset about our season as everyone else. I had high hopes after making the tourney last year, but Sims and Manny have not stepped up their games and the other players haven't shown any improvement either.
Maybe I'm a traditionalist, but give me a point guard who can pass the ball and run the offense, a shooting guard who can step out and hit a shot or drive to the basket, a small forward who can knock down shots and get big when needed and give me a 6'8 and 6'10 player to rebound, block some shots and score on the inside. And as for the bench, some subs who can come in get a few points and keep us in games.
Right now we look like a train wreck.

PLEASE sign Jon Horfordand give us some size on the inside!!!!!!!

I struggle to blame the coach, he has them playing defense really well, and is help getting the team open looks.

They just can't hit the shots.
